John 20:21 is an invitation from Jesus to share in his Father’s mission. Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” To decode that we have to understand what he was sending Jesus to do? Earlier in his life, Jesus answered that mystery for us in Luke 4:17-21;
The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:17-21 (NIV)
The invitation of Jesus is a revolutionary call to fight for the heart of humanity. We are called to an unconventional war using only the weapons of faith, hope, and love. In a similar way, our military share that same vision with a different application. “De Opresso Liber” is a latin phrase on the uniforms of our special forces meaning “Free The Oppressed!” It is a revolutionary call and reminder to remember what and who they are fighting for. They are fighting for freedom whether it’s at home or abroad. And for those of us who embrace the cause of Christ, just like a soldier, the cost to participate in this mission is nothing less than everything we are and everything we have! This fight has nothing to do with religion or position, but rather passion- passion for God and passion for people. It is a fight that Jesus started, and a fight we must stay in until He is finished! ! It’s a call that Heaven is counting on and one Hell is counting out!
